Scripture Reading: John 12:44-50
“I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in Me may not remain in darkness. If anyone hears My words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.” (John 12:46-47)
When Jesus came to this earth, HIs mission was to save His people from their sins: “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10). He came so that whoever believes in Him “may not remain in darkness,” the darkness of sin, ignorance, and despair. Jesus came to bring light and life to mankind: “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men” (John 1:4). He is the only way to eternal life: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
This raises a fundamental truth about the Christian faith. The gospel is not about what we do for God; it is about what God does for us. God rescued us: “He rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins” (Colossians 1:13-14). Jesus came on a rescue mission — to save us! This was His mission when He came to earth the first time.
Jesus is coming back a second time. His mission then will be to judge all mankind. Paul made this clear in II Timothy 4:1, “I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead…” The words of Scripture declare, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ…” (II Corinthians 5:10). When Jesus comes back, it will be too late for those who have refused to believe in Him, for He comes again not to save but to judge. Thus the call is given: “Seek the Lord while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon” (Isaiah 55:6-7).
Lord Jesus, You came to this earth to seek and to save me. You came to deliver me from darkness and to shed Your light upon me. I know you are coming again to judge. When I stand before You, the only ground I have is that I am a justified sinner who have been saved by Your grace alone.
