Scripture Reading: John 14:1-7
“‘And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to Myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.’ Thomas said to Him, ‘Lord, we do not know where You are going. How can we know the way?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.’” (John 14:3-6)
Jesus was preparing His disciples for His departure. He was comforting them because He knew that they were confused and fearful. He knew that Peter would deny Him and that when He was crucified, the disciples would be shattered and scattered. Jesus explained that He was going to prepare a place for them and He said, “You know the way to where I am going.” Thomas spoke up, “Lord, we do not know where You are going. How can we know the way?”
Jesus used this time of confusion and uncertainty to make one of His greatest claims: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one come to the Father except through Me.” Jesus clearly stated that He alone is “the way” to eternal life; there is no other way to salvation. “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 14:12). Jesus does not merely show us the way; He Himself is the way. No one can come to the Father except through Him.
Jesus claimed to be “the truth.” He is the very embodiment of truth. To know Christ is to know “true Truth.” Because Jesus is the truth, His truth is a living truth. It takes hold of us, influences us powerfully, sanctifies us, guides us and sets us free.
Jesus also claimed to be “the life.” He is the fountain of life (Psalm 36:9). He is the light of life (John 1:4), the word of life (Philippians 2:16), the source of abundant life (John 10:10) and the only way to life eternal (John 3:16). Jesus lives His life in and through us: “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. And the life I now life in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20). Jesus Christ is not only in us; He LIVES in us.
Lord Jesus, I acknowledge that You are the only way to eternal life, the only way to the Father. I know that You are the embodiment of Truth. And I know that You are the life, the source of life and the giver of abundant life now and eternal life to come. You live Your life in me!
