ANOTHER HELPER

Scripture Reading:  John 14:15-17

“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him  nor knows Him.  You know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”  (John 14:16-17)

Jesus was preparing His disciples for His departure.  He would soon face the cross where He would suffer and die.  He told the disciples that they would not be alone for He and the Father would send “another Helper” to be with them and in them.

This promised Helper is the Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Godhead.  In this passage He is called the paraclete, a person who comes along side of another to help.  Thus, we get the English translation “helper.”  The Holy Spirit is our helping presence.  He comes along side of us to comfort, to guide, to convict, and to teach us.

Jesus told His disciples that they would know the Holy Spirit for He would dwell with them and would actually come to dwell within them.  After Pentecost (Acts 2) Jesus’ words became a reality.  The Holy Spirit came in power to dwell with the disciples and to be in them.

All true believers have the Holy Spirit dwelling in them:  “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within  you, whom you have from God?  You are not your own, for you were bought with a price.  So glorify God in your body” (I Corinthians 6:19-20).  We have the Person of the Holy Spirit living in us.  He is always present.  We are never alone, for the Holy Spirit lives in us permanently.

The Holy Spirit is our Helper.  He is within us to minister to us, to lead and direct us, to assure us and to comfort us.  He is the “Spirit of Truth” who teaches us God’s truth and who leads us as we seek to apply His truth.  “You know Him for He dwells with you and will be in you.”

O Holy Spirit, my Divine Helper, thank you for Your presence in my life.  Thank you that I am never alone, that I have You dwelling in me.  My body is Your temple.  Help me glorify God in my body.
