Scripture Reading: John 14:18-20
“I will not leave you as orphans, I will come to you. Yet for a little while and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you too will live. In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.” (John 14:18-20)
Jesus continued to comfort His disciples. He promised them that He would not leave them as orphans. After the resurrection, Jesus appeared to the disciples and others on several occasions. But He also told His disciples that He and the Father would send the Holy Spirit, who would come to dwell within them. Thus, they would not be alone; He would not leave them as orphans.
Jesus makes an even greater promise: “Because I live, you too will live. In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.” Jesus is referring to the mystical union. We are in Christ and He is in us. We have eternal life because He lives in us. The mystical union is one of the great mysteries of the Christian faith. We are so identified with Christ that we become one with Him in His life, His death, and His resurrection. “For if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His. We know that our old self was crucified with Him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin” (Romans 6:5-6). Our old sinful self was crucified with Him and our new redeemed self was raised with Him.
The verse that helps me understand this more clearly is Galatians 2:20: “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Do you see it? My old self was crucified with Christ; but now I live because Christ lives in me. He actually lives in me! I am able to love with His love because He lives in me. I have His strength because He lives in me. He is continually with me because He lives in me.
Lord Jesus, I live because you live and you actually live in me. I was crucified with You in Your death and was raised to life with You in Your resurrection. You are in me and I am in You!
