Scripture Reading: John 14:21-24
“If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.” (John 14:23)
God calls us to obedience. He knows what is best for us and has given us His Word to reveal His will for our lives. When we chose to disobey God, either in doing what He forbids or in failing to do what He commands, we grieve Him.
Jesus clearly states the proper motivation for our obedience in this passage: “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word…” Because we love Jesus, we are motivated to obey Him. We don’t obey Him to earn His favor and acceptance for we already have these things. If we make obedience the grounds for our acceptance by God, we are operating with a works view of salvation, which says if we work hard enough God might accept us.
The gospel says that we are unconditionally loved and accepted by God on the basis of the work of our Savior Jesus Christ. Because we are loved, we are free to respond to God in obedience, motivated by our love and gratitude for who God is and for what He has done for us in His Son.
Loving obedience pleases God greatly. When we are living an open and obedience life, we have fellowship with God in greater ways. God never leaves us, but when we sin, we withdraw from Him. We know that we are guilty of displeasing Him and that we have grieved Him. As a result, we break fellowship with Him.
My father loved me to a fault. I remember an incident when I was a child in which I did something wrong. My mother found out about it. I begged her not to tell my father. I actually told her that I would get the switch and she could discipline me. I did so not because I was afraid of my daddy, but because I loved him so much and didn’t want to disappoint him.
In a far greater way, our heavenly Father loves us with an infinite love. When we understand this, we will want to obey Him because we love Him and do not want to disappoint Him. Reflect on Jesus’ love for us. When we remember how much He loves us, we will be motivated by our love and gratitude to obey Him.
Jesus, I do love you. My desire is to obey You because of my love for You. You know what is best for me and all that You ask of me is for my good. Forgive me when I disappoint and grieve You.
