Scripture Reading:  John 16:12-15

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.  When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come.” (John 16:12-13)

This promise was given directly to Jesus’ disciples prior to His death and resurrection.  They would be the primary agents of Jesus’ authority and His human instruments for the completion of the Scriptures.  They were the Apostles who were given special authority over the development of the early church.  Some of them would be the human writers of the New Testament books.  The Spirit inspired Matthew, Paul, Peter, James and John, who wrote the words of many of the books found in the New Testament:  “When the Spirit of Truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth…He will declare to you the things that are to come.”

Jesus’ promise of the coming of the Spirit of truth also has a broader application to us as well.  The Spirit of truth inspired the human writers of the Bible; He also illuminates our hearts and minds to understand and to apply the inspired Word of God in our lives.  He guides us into the truth; He opens our minds and gives us understanding of God’s Word.  The Spirit of truth reveals God’s will to us as we read the Scriptures; He opens our hearts to be receptive of what we read.  It its the Spirit who reminds us of God’s truth and prompts us to obedience.

This is why it is important to acknowledge the presence of the Spirit when we read the Scriptures: to ask Him to open our eyes, to illuminate the words of the Bible to us.  We must depend upon the Spirit to lead us into the truths found in God’s Word.  The Spirit convicts us of sin and of righteousness and of judgment (John 16:8-11) as we open God’s Word and meditate upon it.  We are to yield to the Spirit as we seek to understand the revealed will of God and apply it to our daily lives.

O Holy Spirit, Spirit of truth, guide me into all the truth that You have revealed through the Word of God.  Open my heart and mind to hear it, to understand it, and to live it.
