Scripture Reading: John 18:37-40
“Then Pilate said to Him, ‘So You are a king?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world — to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.’ Pilate said to Him, ‘What is truth?’” (John 18:37-38)
What a scene this must have been! Pilate, who was responsible fot determining the truth, asks the question — “What is truth?” — to the One who is truth incarnate. This is the way of the world. Those of the world dismiss the One who is the very source of truth. They suppress the truth: “”For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them” (Romans 1:18-19).
Jesus is the Truth (John 14:6). He came into this world to bear witness of the truth. He is Truth in the flesh, the One who reveals God’s nature and character. He taught God’s truth and lived it out perfectly. He explains the truth and points us to it. He is the very source of divine truth.
Jesus said, “Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.” When God’s truth breaks forth into our lives, we listen to Jesus; we hear His words and accept them as divine truth. Jesus said, “If you abide in My word, you are truly My disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32). This verse helps us understand what Jesus meant when He said, “Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.” Jesus’ voice is found throughout the Scriptures. When we read the Word of God, we are hearing the voice of Jesus. When we submit to the teachings of the Word, the truth will set us free. Abiding in Christ’s Word means that we read it, meditate upon it, and live it out.
Poor Pilate! He had to ask the question, “What is truth?” Little did he know that standing before Him was the One who is the very source of truth, truth incarnate. Unfortunately, many are like Pilate. They suppress the truth of God which can be found all around them. They are in bondage to spiritual ignorance. Jesus is the Truth who can set them free!
Lord Jesus Christ, You are the source of divine truth; You are Truth incarnate. I desire to listen to Your voice and to submit to Your will as it is revealed in Your Word. I know that Your truth will set me free.
