DOUBTING THOMAS

Scripture Reading:  John 20:24-29

“Then He (Jesus) said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here, and see My hands; and put out your hand, and place it on My side.  Do not disbelieve, but believe.’  Thomas answered Him, ‘My Lord and my God!’” (John 20:27,28)

Thomas had not been with the other disciples when Jesus appeared to them.  When the others told Thomas that they had seen the Lord, Thomas did not believe them.  He said, “Unless I see in His hands the mark of the nails and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into His side, I will never believe” (v. 25).

There is no question that Thomas had been fully devoted to Jesus.  However, he often looked on the downside of things (see:  John 11:16).  He easily become despondent and doubtful.  He saw the glass half empty and he usually questioned things (see:  John 14:1-6).  Even a devoted disciple like Thomas can become despondent and doubtful!

Eight days after Thomas expressed his doubt about the resurrection of Jesus, Jesus appeared to them again.  This time Thomas was present.  Jesus gave a greeting to them, “Peace be with you” (v. 26).  Then He immediately turned to Thomas and said:  “Put your finger here, and see My hands; and put out your hand, and place it on My side.  Do not disbelieve, but believe” (v. 27).  When Thomas heard the words of Jesus and saw Him, he said, “My Lord and My God!” (v. 28).  Thomas doubt turned to faith!  Then Jesus said, “Have you believed because you have seen Me?  Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believed” (v. 29).

Many of us would like to see a physical manifestation of Jesus.  We will one day!  But now, “We see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face” (I Corinthians 13:12).  The writer to the Hebrews defined faith for us:  “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1).  This is why Jesus told Thomas:  “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believed.”  Faith in Jesus is essential for our salvation.  “Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6).

Lord Jesus, I know that faith is a gift from You.  Thank You for giving me new life and for blessing me with faith.  I believe because You opened my eyes to behold Your beauty by faith.
