Scripture Reading: John 21:25
“Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.” (John 21:25)
John closes his gospel account of the life of Christ with this observation: “Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.” John is emphasizing the limitless nature of all that Jesus did for mankind. Jesus did so much for us that all the books in the world would not be enough to record what He did!
Throughout his gospel account, John’s focus and primary subject is Jesus Christ. He wrote about the humiliation of Jesus. He told us how God became man and entered into this broken world of fallen humanity. He told us about Jesus’ ministry of teaching, healing, restoring, reconciling, and redeeming mankind. John emphasized Jesus’ sufferings while on this earth. He told us about the mockery He faced and how Jesus was crucified, that He had died, and how He was buried. John said that Jesus did many other things that are not written in the Bible. He created and He destroyed; He ruled and He over-ruled; He loved and He rebuked; He confronted and He restored; He challenged false belief systems and He taught Truth; He warned and He encouraged; and the list could go on and on. We cannot exhaust all that Jesus’ did.
John also wrote about Jesus’ exaltation. On the third day, He was raised to life. The tomb was empty when the women and the disciples came to anoint the body. Then Jesus revealed Himself on many occasions. Most of them were not recorded int he gospel accounts (see: I Corinthians 15:3-11). He commissioned His Church to be His witnesses. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God.
No human being can grasp all that Jesus Christ has done for us. It would be impossible to write enough books to tell the whole story. John was taken with the magnitude of the limitless works of Jesus and so should we!
Lord Jesus, I cannot begin to grasp all that You have done for mankind. What I do understand leaves me in awe of who You are and of what You have done. I stand amazed at You; I am filled with wonder and joy when I consider these things!
