Scripture Reading:  Acts 3:11-16

“And His name — by faith in His name — has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all.”  (Acts 3:16)

After the lame beggar was healed, he clung to Peter and John (v. 11).  A crowd gathered around them and Peter gave an explanation of the healing.  Peter made it clear that the miracle did not occur because of the power or piety of the apostles:  “Men of Israel, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we have made him walk?” (v. 12).  Instead Peter gave credit to whom credit was due:  “And by His name — by faith in HIs name — has made this man strong whom you see and know and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all” (v. 16).  It was Jesus Christ who healed the lame beggar!

We also see the importance of faith.  Faith is the instrument through which God’s work is appropriated to us.  It is through faith that we are saved:  “For by grace you have been saved through faith.  And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not as a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2:8,9).  The man was healed as God granted grace to him.  He wasn’t healed because of his faith, but rather through his faith.  It was Christ who made salvation and healing possible for this man.  God gave the man faith to believe.

We must never take any credit for the work that God does in and through us.  God alone saves us, heals us, delivers us and uses us.  He gives us faith so that we can trust Him and God uses that faith as the instrument through which He does His work in and through us.

Lord Jesus, You alone are the reason I was saved and You alone can deliver me from the troubles I face.  Thank You for the gift of faith that enables me to trust You no matter what I face.  Through faith, I want to be available for You to use me this day.
