Scripture Reading: Acts 4:5-12
“This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. And there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:11,12)
Peter and John were brought before the Sanhedrin, which was the highest tribunal of the Jews. These religious asked them: “By what power or by what name did you do this?” (v. 7). They wanted to know how the lame beggar had been healed. What they really wanted to know was who gave them the authority or the power to heal?
Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, gave his defense. His message was clear and the answer was simple: “Let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead — by Him this man is standing before you well” (v. 10).
Peter then referred to Psalm 118:22. Peter told them that Jesus was the fulfillment of this Messianic prophecy: “This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone” (v. 11). He made it clear that Jesus though rejected by the religious leaders had become the headstone of the Kingdom of God.Then Peter boldly declared: “And there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (v. 12).
Many in our pluralistic society find this statement offensive. But Jesus Himself said, “I am the way and the truth and the life, no man comes to the Father but through Me” (John 14:6). I don’t think that either of these statements can be any clearer. Jesus Christ is the only way to eternal life; there is no other.
Why is this the case? Because salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ is God’s only plan. Our salvation cost God dearly — it cost Him His Son. Jesus paid the price to redeem us from our sins and He alone can save us.
Lord Jesus, I know that You are the stone the builders rejected. You were crucified by the hands of religious people. But You became the cornerstone of the Church and the only means of salvation. Thank You for all You did to save me!
