Scripture Reading: Acts 13:26-35
“For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because they did not recognize Him nor understand the utterances of the prophets, which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning Him. And though they found in Him no guilt worthy of death, they asked Pilate to have Him executed.” (Acts 13:27,28)
Paul is referring to the Jewish leaders who convinced Pilate to put Jesus to death. It is amazing to think that these Pharisees and Scribes failed to understand that the Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah were fulfilled in Jesus. They were students and scholars of the Scriptures. We are told by Paul that “they did not recognize Him nor understand the utterances of the prophets, which are read every Sabbath.” How could these people who knew the Scriptures fail to see the fulfillment of them in Jesus?
Paul gives us the explanation in II Corinthians: “And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled only to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God” (II Corinthians 4:3,4). Why could these Jewish religious not understand that Jesus was the fulfillment of the Scriptures that they read and studied regularly? Because they were spiritually blind. Satan blinded their minds to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ.
These Jewish leaders could not understand the meaning of the Scriptures. Unless the Holy Spirit enlightens the mind, people remain in spiritual darkness: “The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned” (I Corinthians 2:14).
How thankful we should be that the Holy Spirit enlightened our minds so that we can grasp the light of the gospel!
O Holy Spirit, thank You for causing me to be born again. Thank You that You have enlightened my mind and revealed the truth of the gospel to me.
