Scripture Reading: Ephesians 1:1-14
“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace, which He lavished upon us, in all wisdom and might.” (Ephesians 1:7,8)
God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world so that we could be holy and blameless before Him. But the reality is that we are not holy and blameless. We are the opposite — unholy and guilty. No matter how hard we try, we can never become holy and blameless in our own efforts, because we all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Even when we put forth our best effort, we can never meet God’s standard of holiness and perfection (Matthew 5:48). And even if we could, we can never pay God the debt we owe; it is humanly impossible.
God provided the only means to make us holy and blameless. He sent His Son Jesus Christ to redeem us. The gospel is the good news about what God has done for us. He so loved us that He sent His Son (John 3:16), so that those who believe in Him can have eternal life with God. Jesus Christ became the atoning sacrifice for our sins (I John 2:2). Jesus, who is holy and blameless, became our substitute: “For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that we might become the righteousness of God” (II Corinthians 5:21).
We were purchased (redeemed) by the precious blood of Jesus Christ, the unblemished and spotless Lamb of God (II Peter 1:18,19). The redemption which was accomplished by Christ makes the forgiveness of our sins possible. Redemption is fully the result of the riches of God’s grace which He lavishes upon us (vs. 7,8). Notice the excessive nature of the language — the RICHES of God’s grace, which He LAVISHES upon us! Redemption demonstrates the extent of the love of God, a love that is so enormous that we cannot fully comprehend it (Ephesians 3:17-19).
Do you see who you are in Christ: You have been chosen by God, adopted into His family, redeemed by His Son. You are loved beyond all measure. You are precious in God’s sight. In fact, you are the apple of God’s eye! All this is possible because You are in Christ. Jesus Christ has redeemed you through His blood and your sins have been fully forgiven. We must constantly remind ourselves of these facts. Our identity in Christ makes us fully acceptable to God. We are safe and secure because Christ is in us. Nothing can rob us of these things.
Lord Jesus Christ, My Redeemer, You purchased me with Your precious blood. You were crushed for my iniquities and wounded for my transgressions. The Lord laid on You my iniquity. You became sin for me and shed Your blood to redeem me. Now I am holy and blameless before the Father because the riches of Your grace have been lavished upon me.
