Scripture Reading: Ephesians 1:1-14
“Making known to us the mystery of His will; according to His purpose, which He set forth in Christ, as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in Him, things in heaven and on earth.” (Ephesians 1:9,10)
The word “mystery” as used in the Bible refers to the revelation of something that was previously hidden or only vaguely known, but is now more fully known. Paul tells us that God has chosen to reveal His will that was previously unknown to us in Christ. This mystery is “to unite all things in Him, things in heaven and on earth” (v. 10).
The great mystery that was not fully known before Jesus Christ came into the world is that everything in heaven and on earth has been placed under the Lordship of Jesus. We can be assured that all things are subject to the perfect will of our sovereign King and Lord, Jesus Christ. This includes thrones and dominions and rulers and all authorities: “For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities — all things were created through Him and for Him and He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:16,17).
The great mystery is that Christ unites all things to Himself. Later in the epistle, Paul writes more about the mystery (3:3-11). He speaks specifically about the mystery that Gentiles are to now engrafted into the family of God: “This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow hears, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel” (3:6). There were rare exceptions of Gentiles becoming part of the people of God in the Old Testament; but now in Christ what was vaguely known then has became a reality now.
Christ breaks down walls of separation and He unites all things to Himself, for He is our peace (2:14). He reconciles us to God (II Corinthians 5:18), and to one another (Ephesians 2:14-22). This is the great mystery of God that has now been fully revealed to us.
Lord Jesus, You alone are able to unite sinful people to Your heavenly Father. You also enable us to be reconciled to one another for, You are our peace.
