Scripture Reading:  Ephesians 1:1-14

“In Him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of His glory.”  (Ephesians 1:11,12)

As the children of God, we are guaranteed to receive an eternal inheritance.  This eternal inheritance is very different from any earthly inheritance we may receive.  Peter describes it as “imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you” (I Peter 1:4).  Our promised inheritance is certain because our destiny is certain.  We have been predestined according to the very purpose of God, which is that we are His beloved children who will spend eternity in His presence.

We are “heirs of God and joint fellow heirs of Christ” (Romans 8:17).  Nothing can rob us of this eternal inheritance because the Holy Spirit is the guarantee of our inheritance until we take possession of it (v. 14).  The indwelling Spirit is the down payment because He ensures us that we will receive the inheritance.  We are sealed by the Spirit (v. 13), that is the Holy Spirit certifies that we are loved and accepted by God.  We bear God’s royal seal — His Spirit!  Thus His Spirit guarantees that we we will obtain this eternal inheritance, which God has promised to give to us.

To be honest, I am not sure what is included in this inheritance.  I know that as joint heirs with Christ we will reign with Him over the new heavens and new earth.  All that is His will be ours also!  We will receive glorified bodies and we will live in a perfect world that has been fully restored at the end of time.  We will be united with fellow loved ones who are in the Lord.  We will behold God’s majestic glory and see Jesus face to face!  Now we have the Holy Spirit living in us.  But there is more to come!

Lord Jesus, because You have redeemed me, I have become holy and blameless before Your Father.  Out of His great love, He has adopted me into His family.  You, Lord Jesus, are my Brother, and by your grace I am a fellow heir with You of an inheritance that is imperishable and undefiled and is reserved in heaven for me.
