Scripture Reading: Ephesians 2:4-10
“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ — by grace you have been saved — and raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” (Ephesians 2:4-6)
What is being said of us in the is passage is remarkable! We are being told that we have already been raised with Christ and have been seated with Him in the heavenly places now, in the present! Paul uses the aorist tense of the verbs — past action that has been completed. We have been made alive together with Christ, raised with Him and seated with Him in the heavenly places. It is already done!!
Paul is working out a comparison here. His basic case is that what is true of us spiritually is similar to what happened to our Lord Jesus. Christ was raised from the dead. There was a period in which He was dead in the grave. But He came out from the state and place of the dead. Paul says that is what has happened to us spiritually. We have been made alive again and have been raised with Christ! We are no longer spiritually dead — we are alive! And now we are sharing the life of Christ and are therefore becoming more like Him. We are different now than we were before.
We have also been seated with Him in the heavenly places. We have a new home. We no longer belong to this world; our citizenship is in heaven with Christ (Philippians 3:20). We belong under the control of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:14). We are in the heavenly places, the realm where we are near to God. We have access to Him and we have been seated with Him. The work of redemption has been accomplished. Now we can have rest and victory with Christ.
This is our identity in Christ. We have been made alive together with Him and raised up with Him and seated in the heavenly places. Our status has changed — we are no longer slaves to sin; we are sons and daughters of the King of this universe. We belong to Him because He purchased us with the blood of His Son.
Lord God, do not let me forget what you have done for me. You made me alive with Christ; You raised me up with Him; You seated me with Him in the heavenly places. You have already done these things for me. Now let me remember what I have in Christ.
NOTE: I am in Taiwan for the Christ’s College Board meeting. The devotionals may come on a different schedule this week and the beginning of next week. Please pray for us as we have meetings beginning today.
