Scripture Reading: Ephesians 2:11-22
“And might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. And He came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who are near. For through Him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.” (Ephesians 2:16, 17)
Sin separates us from God. Paul says we were once God’s enemies because of sin (Romans 5:10). There is a huge wall that exists between sinful human beings and a holy God. No effort we make can break down this wall of hostility.
But the good news of the gospel is that Jesus Christ came and He broke down in HIs flesh the dividing wall (v. 14). He does so through the cross. Jesus’ death on the cross put to death the enmity between sinful man and a holy God. On the cross, Jesus paid for our sins with His precious blood. He was the atoning sacrifice that satisfied the justice of God. He bore God’s wrath in our place so that we could be forgiven of our sins.
Paul put it this way: “But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by His blood, much more shall we be saved by Him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by His life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation” (Romans 5:8-11).
Because of the atoning work of Jesus Christ, we now have peace with God. The hostility is gone! Jesus is our peace and He alone is able to reconcile us to God. “And He came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who are near. For through Him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father” (v. 17).
Do you see it now? Jesus broke down the wall of hostility between us and God. He came to make peace with God for us. Now we have free and open access to the Father. We are loved and accepted by Him because of what Jesus did for us.
Lord Jesus, Prince of Peace, I thank You that You have reconciled me to God. I am no longer an enemy. I am now His child. Thank You that You made it possible for me to have access to the very throne room of God. Thank you that I am loved and accepted by Him on the basis of Your finished work on the cross.
