Scripture Reading: Ephesians 2:19-22
“So then you are no longer strangers and aliens but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone.” (Ephesians 2:19,20).
Paul ends this chapter in his epistle to the Ephesians by giving several descriptions of the Church. He has shown us how God has brought the Gentiles into His covenant community by breaking down the wall of hostility between the Jews and the Gentiles — “For He Himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in His flesh the dividing wall of hostility” (v. 14). Believing Jews and believing Gentiles have now been reconciled in one body through the cross (v. 16). Paul proceeds to describe the redeemed people of God.
“So then you are no longer strangers and aliens but you are fellow citizens with the saints.” At one time we belonged to another kingdom — the kingdom of darkness in which we were “following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience” (2:2). But God came to our rescue — “He rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of HIs beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins” (Colossians 1:13,14).
We now belong to the kingdom of God’s beloved Son and thus are fellow heirs with the saints. Prior to our conversion, we were strangers and aliens to this kingdom; but now we are citizens of it. As fellow citizens with the saints, we have access to the King. What once separated us from Him is now gone. We can now go directly into His presence. And we have all the privileges of being citizens of His kingdom, including living under the protection of the King. Earthly kingdoms come and go; but the kingdom of God is eternal.
O Eternal King, You conquered me and purchased me with the precious blood of Your Son. You delivered me from the domain of darkness and brought me into the Kingdom of Your beloved Son. I live under HIs rule and I am protected by Him. I am no longer a stranger and alien; I am now a fellow citizen with all the saints. Thank You for bringing me near to You by the blood of Jesus.
