Scripture Reading: Ephesians 2:19-22
“So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.” (Ephesians 2:19)
Paul is describing the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in these verses. It can be said that this entire epistle is devoted to a discussion about the Church. So far Paul has called the church “one, new man” (v. 15), and he has described it in terms of a kingdom — “fellow citizens with the saints” (v. 19). Now he changes the imagery from a kingdom to that of a family. He says we are “members of the household of God” (v. 19).
Believers belong to the family of God. We are no longer outsiders, strangers; we are members of God’s household. God is our Father. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in HIs name” (John 1:12). There is no greater honor than this! We are sons and daughters of the King and we have free and open access to Him.
As members of God’s family, we are heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ. “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ” (Romans 8:16,17). It is hard for us to imagine what all this means. There is a glory awaiting us which is so enormous that we are told very little about it. We have an “inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you” (I Peter 1:4).
As members of God’s family, we share the same Spirit. “God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts crying, ‘Abba, Father'” (Galatians 4:6). One of the greatest privileges of being a child of God, being a member of His household, is to Have His Spirit in us all the time. His Spirit reminds us who we are — a beloved child of God — and the Spirit enables us to call out to God as our heavenly Father.
When we receive Christ, we become part of His family. God is our Father. Christ is our Brother and we become members of the household of God.
Lord Jesus, Your blood brought me near to God. You made it possible for me to become a member of Your family. Thank You that I am a child of God and a joint heir of Yours. Remind me again how much I am loved and accepted because of this!
