Scripture Reading:  Ephesians 3:1-6

“For this reason I Paul, a prisoner for Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles — assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace that was given to me for you, how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly.” (Ephesians 3:1-3)

Paul clearly understood his calling from God.  He knew that God made him a steward of His grace.  The gospel had been assigned to Paul in sacred trust.  God Himself revealed the gospel to Paul.  “For I would have you know, brothers, that the gospel that was preached by me is not man’s gospel.  For I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ” (Galatians 1:11,12).

Paul took his stewardship of God’s grace seriously.  He was responsible to guard it’s message carefully and to share it effectively with others — especially to the Gentiles.  We will understand more about this as we look at these verses more carefully in the days to come.

Paul also told us that once God has reconciled us to Himself, He entrusts to us the ministry of reconciliation, which is another way of saying that we are also stewards of God’s grace.  “All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to Himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation” (II Corinthians 5:18,19).

Because we too have been entrusted with this stewardship, we are ambassadors for Christ.  “Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ, God making HIs appeal through us.  We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God” (II Corinthians 5:20).  Jesus made it clear that we are to be a light to the world (Matthew 5:14) and that we are to be His witnesses (Acts 1:8).

Thus, like Paul we are stewards of God’s grace.  We are responsible for this ministry of reconciliation that has been entrusted to us by God.  We are called to share the good news of God’s grace in Jesus Christ with others.  We are to be faithful ambassadors and witnesses for Christ in our neighborhoods, our workplaces, our schools, and our communities.

Lord, like Paul You have entrusted me with the gospel of Your grace.  I am called to be a faithful steward of it.  Let me be faithful in this calling and enable me this day to share Your grace in Jesus Christ with others.
