Scripture Reading:  Ephesians 3:7-13

“And to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things, so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 3:9,10)

This is one of those passages that you have to read several times in order to grasp what is being written.  One of God’s goals for His church is for His people to live in such a way that the angels will be able to see the manifold wisdom of God.  We rarely, if ever, consider that what happens among God’s people here on earth serves to bear witness to angelic beings!  The phrase, “the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places,” clearly refers to angels.

Believe it or not, God’s redemptive purposes are of interest to angels.  These are “things into which angels long to look” (I Peter 1:12).  What we do in the church bears witness to the whole host of heaven.  There is a cosmic significance to what we do as members of Christ’s Church.  We are to make manifest in our lives the excellencies of our Creator and Redeemer, so that angels may see His great wisdom!

Paul describes God’s wisdom as “manifold.”  Literally this means God’s multi-colored wisdom.  We see it in creation.  Look around and observe the great beauty of God’s creation.  Look at the colors and the diversity of the created order.  Look at the immensity of it.

We also see God’s manifold wisdom in individuals.  Look at the handiwork of God in individual people.  We are so different and yet we are all made by the same Creator.  Look at the individuals in the church.  There is great diversity in looks and in personalities.  This is God’s manifold wisdom.

One day we will fully see the manifold wisdom of God when all the redeemed people of God stand by the sea (Revelation 15:2) and join together in praise saying, “Great and amazing are Your deeds, O Lord God the Almighty!  Just and true are Your ways, O King of the nations!”  (Revelation 15:3).

Lord Jesus, may I be a faithful witness of Yours not only to my fellow human beings but also to the great host of angelic beings.  May I reflect Your manifold wisdom in the way I live my life on this earth.

Thank you for helping me understand this portion of scripture. It is awesome to think that angels are watching me. Do you think they watch over us as well?

Hebrews 1:14 “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?”
