Scripture Reading:  Ephesians 2:11-13

“This was according to the eternal purpose that He has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in Him.”  (Ephesians 2:11,12)

God has an eternal purpose.  He is determined to have a people who are holy and blameless before Him in love:  “Even as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him” (1:4).  Nothing can prevent God’s eternal purpose from being fulfilled.  Throughout all human history, God is at work bringing His purpose into a reality.

God’s purpose is to work all things according to the counsel of His will:  “Having been predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will” (1:11).  This means that nothing can prevent God’s will from being accomplished.  God has a purpose, a plan for each of us.  He works all things according to that purpose.

We, God’s children, are part of God’s eternal purpose.  This means that our lives matter to God.  We have significance because we are part of God’s eternal purpose.  And we are secure because God is determined for us to spend eternity with Him.  Nothing can prevent this from happening.  We are predestined according to His eternal purpose and thus He will see that His plan for our lives will be accomplished.

This eternal purpose of God is realized in Christ.  It is Christ who carries out this purpose.  Jesus made it possible for us to be reconciled to God (2:13).  Jesus has been put far above all rule and authority and power and dominion (1:21).  He has ultimate authority over all things.  Thus, Jesus will work the eternal purpose of God to its completion.

What peace this should give us!  We are part of God’s eternal purpose.  God has determined our ultimate destiny.  Jesus is working all things according to God’s eternal purpose.  We are safe and secure!  Our lives matter to God!

Lord Jesus Christ, thank You that You sovereignly are working out the eternal purpose of God.  You rule and over-rule to ensure that His purpose is accomplished.  Thank You that I have been chosen to be part of this eternal plan.
