Scripture Reading:  Ephesians 3:14-21

“That you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:17b-19)

Paul continues his prayer for us.  He is praying that we would be strengthened with power through God’s Spirit in our inner beings. (v. 16).  We are weak and frail in our faith.  We need to be strengthened and we need to be reminded that Christ dwells in our hearts through faith (v. 17a).

Paul moves to a deeper level in his prayer.  He prays that we would be rooted and grounded in love.  This suggests an inward stability:  that we know how much we are loved by God and how nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:38,39).  God’s love for us is an everlasting love — “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you” (Jeremiah 31:3).  God’s love for us never ceases.  We are precious in His sight (Isaiah 43:4).

God’s love for us is so great that we cannot fully comprehend it — it surpasses knowledge!  Yet Paul prays that we may have strength in the inner man to comprehend the breadth and length and height and depth of God’s love.  Paul knows this is impossible.  He wants us to get glimpses of this extravagant love.  He wants us to experience it in our hearts.  He wants us to hear God saying, “I love you!.”

When we taste of God’s love for us, we find a deep sense of fulfillment.  We find that we are loved and accepted by God more than we ever imagined possible.  And when we know and experience His love, we are “filled with the fullness of God.”  We are satisfied and complete.  We become overwhelmed with God’s presence and love in our lives.

“O the deep, deep love of Jesus, vast, unmeasured, boundless, free!  Rolling as a mighty ocean in its fullness over me, underneath me, all around me, is the current of Thy love, leading onward, leading homeward to my glorious rest above.”  (Samuel Trevor Francis)

Lord God, I know that I am rooted and grounded in Your love.  I know that You love me with an everlasting love.  I know that nothing can separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus.  Let me experience Your love and presence in my life in greater ways.
