THE POWER OF PRAYER

Scripture Reading:  Joshua 10:1-15

“The sun stopped in the midst of heaven and did not hurry to set for about a whole day.  There has been no day like it before or since, when the Lord obeyed the voice of a man, for the Lord fought for Israel.”  (Joshua 10:13b,14)

The king of Jerusalem formed a coalition with four other kings to punish the Gibeonites for entering into a treaty with the Israelites (v. 4).  The combined armies gathered and encamped against Gibeon (v. 5).  The Gibeonites called upon Joshua to come to their aid — “Do not relax your hand from your servants.  Come up quickly, and save us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites who dwell in the hill country are gathered against us” (v. 6).  So Joshua led his army to defend the people of Gibeon (v. 7).

The outcome of this battle was crucial for the future of the Israelites.  This was the first time Joshua met the combined forces of the Canaanites in an open and head on battle.  God intervened and confounded the Amorities — “And the Lord threw them into a panic before Israel, who struck them with a great blow at Gibeon…” (v. 10).  Then the Lord sent a severe hailstorm and more of the Amorites were killed by the hailstorm than were killed by Joshua’s army (v. 11).  This was an unprecedented opportunity for Joshua to destroy the southern confederacy.  However, he realized the day was advancing and the battle was not over.  So Joshua made a bold request — “Sun, stand still at Gibeon, and moon in the Valley Aijalon” (v. 12).  Joshua asked God to prolong the day and God answered Joshua’s prayer.  A miracle took place.

Nothing is too great for God because He is all powerful.  I often wonder how much I have let go past me because I failed to pray.  James says, “You do not have because you do not ask”  (James 4:2).  We all face huge challenges at times in our lives.  Some of these challenges seem impossible to overcome.  Joshua prayed for a miracle.  Why don’t we do the same?

Lord God, I know that You hear my prayers.  I also know that You want the best for me.  I am facing some major challenges now.  Some of them seem impossible to overcome.  I am asking You to give me victory over these challenges.  I fully trust You and will accept Your perfect will.
