Scripture Reading: Joshua 23:1-5
“I am now old and well advanced in years and you have seen all that the Lord your God has done to all these nations for your sake, for it is the Lord your God who has fought for you.” (Joshua 23:2b-3)
Joshua is now an old man. The last two chapters of the book record the farewell addresses of Joshua, first to the leadership (chapter 23) and then to the entire people (chapter 24). There is something very moving about the last words of a great man. He is speaking from the depths of his heart. In chapter 23, Joshua is addressing the leadership. Caleb was there and so was Phineas along with the elders, judges and officers of the people of Israel.
The first thing Joshua does is to remind these leaders of the faithfulness of God. He gives God all the credit — “You have seen all that the Lord your God has done…for it is the Lord your God who has fought for you.” These leaders could have easily taken credit for the victories themselves. They could have been filled with pride because of the successes they had experienced. But Joshua wanted to give credit to whom credit was due.
Joshua went on to say that God will remain faithful in the future. He was faithful in the past and He will remain faithful in the years to come — “The Lord your God will push them back before you and drive them out of your sight. And you shall possess their land, just as the Lord your God promised you” (v. 5). Joshua was referring to the remaining territory that needed to be taken. There were still smaller cities and areas that had to be conquered.
As I look back over the years of my life, I can clearly see God’s had at work. He has guided me through good times and through hard times. He has given me many victories and He has fought many battles for me. Whatever successes I have had, I owe them to the Lord — “for it is the Lord your God who has fought for you.”
God is faithful. Just as He has been faithful to me in the past, I know He will be faithful to me in the years to come. I have nothing to fear for God will do all He promised to me. I still have battles to fight, and challenges and opportunities that lay before me. But in all things I want to give God credit for what He has done and for what He will do.
Lord God, You have been so faithful to me. I know You have fought many battles for me. You have directed my steps and You have given me victories throughout my life. I am so thankful for all You have done for me. I also know that You will be faithful to me in the future. I face many challenges and many opportunities yet. Let me always give you the credit for whatever successes I experience in life.
