Scripture Reading: Romans 1:16,17
“For in it (the gospel) the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, as it is written, ‘The righteous shall live by faith.'” (Romans 1:17)
The term “the righteousness of God” in this verse means the righteousness of Christ which is imputed to us through faith. It has to do with our standing before God. When we are justified by God’s free grace through faith. Not only are our sins fully forgiven, but the very righteousness of Jesus Christ is credited to us. He get’s our bad record and we get His perfect record!
Faith is the instrument through which we are justified. Jesus’ finished work (His perfect obedience, death and resurrection) is the basis of our salvation. Faith itself is a gift from God (Ephesians 2:8,9). We are saved by grace through faith in the finished work of our Savior, Jesus Christ. One cannot have eternal life apart from faith in Christ.
Years ago I read this statement — “Faith is the trunk of the tree whose roots represent God’s grace and whose fruit symbolizes good works.” Our salvation is rooted and grounded in God’s grace, His unmerited favor toward us. We receive the gift of salvation through faith.
True saving faith consists of the following. First, faith involves knowledge. We must know the meaning of the gospel. We must understand the work of Christ on our behalf. It is necessary to understand how grievous our sins are before a Holy God and we must acknowledge that the only means of forgiveness and salvation is through the Person and work of Jesus Christ. Second. we must have a heart-felt conviction of the truthfulness of the gospel. We must truly believe (have deep conviction) that Jesus is the only means of salvation. Conviction moves us from the head to the heart. And third, we must trust Christ alone for our salvation. We must rest upon Him and Him alone for our eternal life.
“The righteous wall live by faith.” This is a quote from Habakkuk 2:4. We are not only saved through faith, we live each day of our lives by faith that God is with us and that He will direct our paths.
Lord God, thank You for giving me Your gift of faith. Thank You for enabling me to believe in my Savior Jesus Christ. Let me live by faith this day and every day of my life.
