Scripture Reading:  Romans 1:24-32

“Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever !  Amen.”  (Romans 1:24,25)

What terrifying words these are — “God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity.”  Unrestrained sin intensifies and aggravates itself.  According to this passage, there is a point where God gives certain people up to the lusts of their hearts and they reap for themselves a greater vengeance.

The fundamental problem is that they exchange the truth of God for a lie.  They ignore what is true and right.  They reel against God and openly defy Him.  They make themselves gods, so they think, by attempting to make lies become truth.  As Paul wrote earlier in this epistle, “They suppress the truth” (v. 18) and  “claiming to be wise, they became fools” (v. 22).

Such people also worship themselves.  They are self-centered and self-serving.  They are unrestrained in their sinful actions.  They become obsessed with sex (vs. 26,27); they lack purpose and meaning (v. 28); they are self-centered hedonists (vs. 29,31); and they not only practice such things but they give approval to all who join them in their sinful actions (v. 32).

What frightens me most is that I see these things happening before my very eyes.  However, I am not ready to give up.  I plead to God for a fresh movement of His Spirit.  Our hope is the gospel of Jesus Christ.  It is the “power of God for salvation to everyone who believes” (v. 16).  Let’s join together in prayer for a true revival among God’s people.  I still believe God’s promise — “If My people who are called by My name humble themselves, and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (II Chronicles 7:14).

Lord God, as I observe the decline in the moral state of our society and the lack of spiritual zeal among Your people, I plead for forgiveness and healing.  I want to humble myself before You as I pray for renewal and revival.  Let me seek Your face and turn from my wicked ways.  I pray this not only for myself but for all Your people.  We desperately need a fresh movement of the Holy Spirit among us.  Bring healing, forgiveness, and a renewed zeal for You and for Your Kingdom.  Thank You that the gospel is Your power for salvation to everyone who believes.
