Scripture Reading:  Romans 3:9-19

“Are the Jews any better off?  No, not at all.  For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, as it is written” ‘None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands, no one seeks for God.”  (Romans 3:9-11)

Paul is making the point that sin is a universal problem.  No ordinary human being is exempt from it — “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (v. 23).  Whether Jew or Gentile, religious or irreligious, spiritual or secular, all are under sin.  Thus, “None is righteous, no, not one.”

Human beings are born into this world with a sinful nature, which they inherited from their first father Adam — “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned” (Romans 5:12).  This sinful nature affects all human beings by produces spiritual death — “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1).

Because we are spiritually dead, “No one understands, no one seeks for God” (v. 11).  The matter is clear — “There is no fear of God before their eyes” (v. 18).  As a result, human beings cannot grasp spiritual truth until the eyes of their hearts have been opened by God Himself — “But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised” (I Corinthians 2:14).

Spiritual death is the hopeless and helpless state of human beings without the grace of God.  No one can save himself, no matter how hard he may try.  Sin is the root problem and it is a universal problem.  The only hope mankind has is for a Savior to come who will redeem them from this sinful condition.  The Savior has come.  Jesus Christ brings new life, forgiveness, hope, freedom and eternal life. to those who believe in Him.

Lord Jesus, thank You for coming to save me from my sinful state.  Thank You for the Holy Spirit who made me alive spiritually and gave me the gift of faith to believe in You.
