THE CRY FOR HELP

Scripture Reading:  Romans 7:14-25

“Wretched man that I am!   Who will deliver me from this body of death?  Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!  For then, I myself serve the law with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.”  (Romans 7:24,25)

Paul was dealing with his inward struggle — “I do not understand my own actions.  For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate” (v. 15).  We must realize that we all experience a major battle within us — “So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand.  For I delight in the law of God in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members” (vs. 22,23).

The battle within Paul was so intense that he cried out, “Wretched man that I am!  Who will deliver me from this body of death?”  Paul did not ignore the struggle going on inside of him. He agonized over it.  God wants us to take our sin seriously.  He wants us to acknowledge the problem of indwelling sin and the conflict it causes within us.  We have to admit how wretched we are and how much we need to be delivered from our sins.

Paul knew the answer to his question — “Who will deliver me from this body of death?   There is only One who can deliver us from the consequences of sin — “Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!”  Jesus Christ is the answer; He alone can save us from our sins and He alone can give us the power to yield to the Spirit within us and not to the flesh.  We cannot win the inward battle in our own strength.  We have to surrender and turn to Jesus in faith.  He is our only hope!

Lord Jesus, I acknowledge the waging war within me.  I know the struggle well.  No matter how hard I try in my own strength to resist sin, the flesh continues to influence me.  I am a wretched man who desperately needs deliverance.  Jesus, I know You are the answer to my sin problem.  I turn to You and seek Your power to enable me to resist sin and to live my life for Your honor and glory.
