Scripture Reading:  Romans 8:1-4

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”  (Romans 8:1)

Paul explained the terrible struggle that goes on in each of us — “For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing” (7:19).  Paul was frustrated and disappointed with himself.  He cried out — “Wretched man that I am!  Who will deliver me from this body of death?” (7:24).  He knew the answer to his question — “Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord” (7:25a).

But Paul also knew that he would continue to have this inward struggle — “So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin” (7:25b).  Yet he believed that the deliverance Jesus Christ made possible freed him from the condemnation that sins brings upon those who disobey God.  Jesus paid the price for Paul and He paid the price for us.  He bore the condemnation that we rightly deserve.  Even though our disobedience to the law renders us guilty, God’s provision of HIs Son frees us from condemnation — “For God had done what the law, weakened by flesh, could not do.  By sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit” (vs. 3,4).

Do you see it now?  Jesus fulfilled the righteous requirements of the law by His perfect obedience to it and He bore the condemnation we deserve in our place to pay the price for our sins.  As a result — “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”  Do you understand what the is means?  All our sins have been atoned for by Jesus.  We bear no quilt.  They are gone forever — “As far  as the east is from the west, so far does He remove our transgressions from us” (Psalm 103:12).

Lord Jesus, thank You for fulfilling the righteous requirements of the law on my behalf.  I have failed to keep the law so many times in my life.  And thank You for bearing the condemnation that is rightly mine for failing to keep God’s law.  You paid the price that I owe God.  On the basis of what You have done for me, I am set free from condemnation now and forever.
