Scripture Reading: Romans 8:1-4
“For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.” (Romans 8:2)
As we have seen, we are condemned by the law, but the good news is that we have now been set free by the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus. The Greek verb tense used here is the aorist, which describes a one time act that has been completed. We have already been set free! The law of the Spirit of life has already set us free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. It is a done deal!
The phrase “the law of the Spirit of life” is the opposite of the “the law of sin and death.” It refers to the grace of God in Christ Jesus — “Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 5:20,21). We are either under the reign and power of the law or under the reign and power of grace.
Because we are under the law of the Spirit of life, the life of Christ is in us — it is life in Jesus Christ. Christians have been united with Christ in His death and resurrection (Romans 6:3,4). But how does this life of Christ come to us? The life of Christ comes to us through the Holy Spirit. The Spirit that was in Christ is the same Spirit that is in us.
Because the law of the Spirit of life has set us free from the law of sin and death, there is no condemnation — “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (v. 1). We have been set free from sin and death and from the condemnation that comes from sin. And we have the Spirit of Christ living in us now!
Holy Spirit, thank You for setting me free from the law of sin and death. Thank You that You live in me. Enable me this day to appropriate Your presence and power in my life.
