Scripture Reading:  Romans 8:12-17

“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.  For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!'”  (Romans 8:15)

All human beings are not sons and daughters of God.  There is a false notion of the universal fatherhood of God and universal brotherhood of humankind.  This leads to the false view of a universal salvation of all human beings.  The truth is that all human beings are children of Adam by nature.  Therefore, all are sinners by nature and by action.  None of us are sons and daughters of God by nature.

How then can human being become sons and daughters of God?  There are two ways in which we become children of God — by rebirth and by adoption.  We must first be born again.  That is, we must experience a spiritual rebirth.  God must cause us to be born again to a new spiritual life that we did not have before (John 3:1-3; Ephesians 2:4-6).  “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ — by grace you have been saved” (Ephesians 2:4,5).

Second, we become children of God by adoption.  Adoption is a legal action by which a person who is not a natural child is taken into a family and is regarded as a son or daughter.  In the Bible the term “adoption” refers to God’s act of receiving us into His family.  Once we have been justified (Romans 5:1), God then adopts us into His family.  That is when we officially become His sons and daughters.

As adopted sons and daughters of God, we are now being led by His Spirit.  When we are reborn, the Spirit of God comes to lives within us.  We are never alone.  His Spirit works in our hearts and minds to lead us to repentance, to faith, to obedience, and to follow God’s will for our lives.  We no longer have to be afraid because we have the Spirit of God to lead and to guide us.

O Spirit of God, I know that You caused me to be born again into God’s kingdom.  You brought about repentance and faith in my heart and mind.  You opened my eyes to the gospel and made it possible for me to receive Christ.  You were the primary agent who adopted me into the family of God and You live within me to lead and to guide me.
