Scripture Reading:  Romans 8:12-17

“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!'” (Romans 8:15)

In the previous post, we looked at several implications of our relationship with our heavenly Father:  God loves His children; God takes a special interest in His children; and God has special plans for His children.  Today we continue looking at the blessing we have because God is our Father.

Fourth, God leads His children — “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you” (Psalm 32:8).  We may develop our own plans, but God directs our steps (Proverbs 16:9).  What comfort this should give us!  God keeps His eye upon us and will show us the way He wants us to go.  Often we have to wait for His guidance.

Fifth, God disciplines His children — “For the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and chastises every son whom He receives” (Hebrews 12:6).  Out of His great love for us, our heavenly Father disciplines us for our good.  He does not punish us, for Jesus bore the punishment we deserve for our sins.  But God disciplines us when we need correction.

Sixth, God provides for His children — “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1).  Our heavenly Father provides all we need.  He will take care of us and provide for us.  He may not give us everything we want; but He will give us everything we need.

Seventh, God is always ready to receive His children — “Let us draw near with confidence to the throne of God, that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time of need”  (Hebrews 4:16).  We have access to our heavenly Father at all times.  He welcomes us into His presence and actually delights when we come to Him.

Now do you see it?  “See how great a love the Father has bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of God; and such we are!” (I John 3:1)

O Heavenly Father, I know You love me with an everlasting love.  You take a special interest in me and You have special plans for my life.  You lead me through the difficulties and decisions I have to make.  You discipline me because You love me.  You provide everything I need and You are always there for me.  I give You thanks for Your incredible love and provisions for my life.
