Scripture Reading:  Romans 8:12-17

“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.”  (Romans 8:14)

Christians are never alone.  We have the Holy Spirit living in us.  One of the primary duties of the Holy Spirit is to lead God’s people.  To be led by the Spirit means that our lives are being guided and directed by the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit leads us by persuasion.  Paul did not say that we were being forced or driven by the Spirit.  In fact, he uses the passive voice here.  The Greek may better be translated — “As many as are being led by the Spirit.”  He leads by persuasion and not by force.  This is why we are told — “Do not quench the Spirit” (I Thessalonians 5:19)

How then does the Holy Spirit lead us?  First and foremost He leads us by means of the Word of God.  The Holy Spirit inspired the writers of the Scriptures — “But know first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God” (II Peter 1:20,21).  And the Holy Spirit enlightens our minds when we read the Scxriptu

Second, the Holy Spirit acts in our minds.  He enlightens our minds — “Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God” (I Corinthians 2:12).

Third, the Holy Spirit works in our hearts and in our desires — “The love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (Romans 5:5).  This is the still, small voice within us.

Fourth, the Holy Spirit works on our wills — “that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man” (Ephesians 3:16).  The Spirit strengthens our will and determination in the inner man.

Being led by the Holy Spirit is affirmation that we are sons and daughters of God.  Let me say it again — we are never alone; we have the Holy Spirit living in us.  We must learn how to appropriate His presence and be willing to yield to His leading.

O Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me.  I am so thankful that I am not alone; You live in me.  I know that You lead me by the Word and by Your work in my heart, mind and spirit.
