Scripture Reading:  Romans 8:12-17

“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs — heirs of God, and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him.”  (Romans 8:16,17)

God wants us to have assurance of our salvation — “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life” (I John 5:13).  The First Epistle of John is written to help us know that we have eternal life.  Go back and read the entire fifth chapter of I John.  John lays out several tests for us to examine ourselves by.  The bottom line is found in verse 12 — “Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.”

These tests found in I John help us, but the final evidence that we have eternal life comes from the Holy Spirit.  “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God” (v. 16).  It is an inner consciousness in the spirit given by the Spirit of God Himself.

The Westminster Confession of Faith sums it up — “This certainty is not a bare conjectural and probable persuasion grounded upon a fallible hope; but an infallible assurance of faith founded upon the divine truth of the promises of salvation, the inward evidence of those graces unto which these promises are made, the testimony of the Spirit of adoption witnessing with our spirits that we are children of God, which Spirit is the earnest of our inheritance, whereby we are sealed to the day of redemption”  (WCT XVIII:II).

What peace we can have when we come to the assurance of our salvation.  Be sensitive to the Spirit’s presence and know that You belong to God because You have been redeemed by the Son of God and you are sealed by the Spirit of God.

O Holy Spirit,  thank You for Your presence in my life.  Thank You for Your small, still voice that enables me to know that I am a child of God.  Thank You for being the seal of my inheritance.
