WHEN WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO PRAY

Scripture Reading: Romans 8:26,27

“Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” (Romans 8:26)

There have been many times throughout my life when I did not know what to pray. When we are confronted with situations that are so difficult and complex, we fret because we do not know what to ask God for. The Holy Spirit knows our weakness and during those times He takes over; He prays on our behalf.

The Holy Spirit always knows God’s perfect will. He always knows what to say to the Father because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God — “And He who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God” (v. 27).

We must have open hearts, for God searches our hearts — “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds” (Jeremiah 17:10). God knows all about our hearts — “And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do” (Hebrews 4:13). We must open our hearts to God confessing our weakness and acknowledging our need for His help.

The good news is that when we are being tried and things are going against us and we have been confused because of our weakness, God sends His Spirit to help us and to intercede for us according to God’s perfect will.

O Spirit of God, You know my weakness. You know when I do not know what to pray as I ought. The great comfort is that You intercede for me with groanings too deep for words. You ask the Father on my behalf according to His perfect will.
