Scripture Reading: Romans 8:31-39

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?” (Romans 8:35)

The last of Paul’s questions deals with our eternal security. Is God’s love great enough to keep us forever? The answer is a resounding “yes,” for nothing can separate us from the love of Christ — “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels or rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (vs. 38,39).

We must remember the nature of the love of God in Christ Jesus. His love is unconditional, sacrificial, and eternal. God’s love is not based on our love for Him — “In this is love, not that we have loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (I John 4:10). God loves us even when we fail to love, honor and obey Him. His love is centered in His character and thus His love is unconditional and sacrificial.

God’s love is an eternal love — “I have loved you with an everlasting love, therefore, I have continued My faithfulness to you” (Jeremiah 31:3). Do you see it? Because God’s love is eternal, He will always be faithful to us. His love will not let us go.

God’s love is incomprehensible to us; it is too big and great for us to grasp. Paul prayed — “So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith — that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge that you may be filled with the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:17-19).

Lord Jesus, I know that You love me. You laid down Your life for me. There could be no greater love than that. Because you have loved me with an everlasting glove, I know that you will always be faithful to me. And I know that there is nothing that can separate me from Your love.
