HUMAN RESPONSIBILITY

Scripture Reading: Romans 10:5-13

“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.” (Romans 10:9,10)

Romans nine takes us into the eternal realm of God’s sovereignty. It tells us that in HIs love God chose to grant mercy to whomever He wishes — “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion. So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy” (Romans 9:15,15). Election is God’s business. It is His divine right. His people were chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4).

Romans ten, on the other hand, deals with human responsibility. Once we have heard the good news of Jesus Christ and of His grace, mercy, love and forgiveness, we are responsible to repent of our sins and receive Jesus as our personal Savior and Lord — “But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:12,13). Here is the key — “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, YOU WILL BE SAVED.”

When we hear the gospel, we are responsible to respond to it — “For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (v. 13). We are to put our trust in Jesus Christ alone. He is the sole object of our faith. True saving faith consists of knowledge, conviction and ultimately trust. We must know the facts — that we are sinners and that Christ is our only hope. We must have deep conviction about these things. And ultimately we must completely trust Jesus alone for our salvation.

Election is God’s business. We, on the other hand, are responsible to believe in Christ — “For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.”

Lord Jesus, I confess with my mouth that You are Lord and I believe in my heart that God raised You from the dead. I confess that I am a sinner who desperately needs a Savior and I believe that You are the only Savior. I trust You alone for my salvation and I yield to You as the Lord of my life.
