Scripture Reading: Romans 10:14-21
“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17)
The tenth chapter of Romans is dealing with human responsibility. We, God’s people, are His ambassadors; we are to be witnesses of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ gave the order — “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). Paul is telling us what we are called to do — proclaim Jesus Christ.
This section begins with a series of questions: “But how are they to call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in Him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent?” (vs. 14,15a)
The message is clear — “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” We are responsible to tell others about about the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ. We tell them about our own experience with Jesus. Share what He has done for you. Let them see the reality of your faith in Christ.
But we must do more — “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” We must get them into the Scriptures. Remember — “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and or marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). It is God’s Word directed by the Holy Spirit that penetrates hearts!
When I am dealing with someone who is seeking to understand Christianity, I tell them to begin with the Gospel of John. I ask them to read it slowly and carefully. Through the pages of the Bible, Jesus Christ comes alive and the Spirit works in the heart.
Lord Jesus, enable me to be a bold witness today. Let me tell others about You. I know that faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the Word of Christ. As I read Your Word today, let it penetrate my heart and cause me to grow in my love for You.
