THE WISDOM AND KNOWLEDGE OF GOD

Scripture Reading: Romans 11:33-36

“Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and how inscrutable His ways! ‘For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been His counselor?’ Or’ who has given a gift to Him that He might be repaid?’ For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen.” (Romans 11:33-36)

These verses mark the end to the first major section of the Epistle to the Romans (chapters 1-11), in which Paul laid out God’s glorious plan of salvation for His people. When considering what God has done for us, Paul breaks out into a doxology — “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and how inscrutable His ways!” God is omniscient, that is, He is ALL WISE. No human being can begin to grasp the extent of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God.

Paul quotes two passages from the Old Testament. The first one — “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been His counselor?” (Isaiah 40:13) — reminds us that all we can know about God is what He has chosen to reveal about Himself. God is infinite and we are finite. No one can fully comprehend the nature and majesty of God apart from what He has revealed to us in Scripture and in nature.

The second passage — “Or who has given a gift to Him that He might be repaid?” (Job 41:11) — reminds us that no one really gives anything to God. Instead everything we have is a gift from God. Since all these things are from God and through God and to God, He alone is worthy to receive the glory.

When we face things that we do not understand, read this passage. God knows and does what is best for His people and what bring Him the most glory. We can rest in His incomprehensible riches and wisdom and knowledge.

Almighty and Omniscient God, I bow before Your majesty. “Oh, the depths of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!” I stand amazed at Your wisdom, power and gracious character. I know that all things come from You and that You alone are worthy to receive all glory.
