ONE BODY, MANY MEMBERS

Scripture Reading: Romans 12:4-8

“For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not have the same function, so we though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.” (Romans 12:4,5)

The Church is the Body of Christ on earth. Because of this, the Church is to be unified — “There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all” (Ephesians 4:4-6). Then unity of believers is important to God.

Yet within the unity of the Body is the diversity of its members. God has given each member of His Body gifts and abilities that are two be used in serving Christ and in serving others. We are to be good stewards of the gifts and abilities God has given us — “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good” (I Corinthians 12:7). God uniquely places each of us into a body of believers. He has given us gifts to be used for the common good of the that body.

Paul writes — “Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them” (v. 6). God graciously gives these gifts to us and He expects us to use them. We are to be engaged actively in ministry. Every member of the Body is a minister.

Unfortunately we have developed a consumer mentality in the church. We want to take what is offered rather than seeing ourselves as the ones who give and serve. Don’t slip into consumerism. Be a faithful minister!

Lord Jesus, thank you for Your Body, the Church, here on earth. Let me be faithful in using the gifts and abilities You have given me to serve You and to serve others.
