Scripture Reading: Romans 13:11-14

“But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.” (Romans 13:14)

We constantly need spiritual wake up calls — “Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake up from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed” (v. 11). Yes, it is time to wake up for every day we live our lives brings us closer to the fulfillment of our salvation. We must actually seek to apply the gospel to every area of our lives — “The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light” (v. 12).

The key for our spiritual growth (sanctification) is found in verse 14 — “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.” Through faith in Jesus Christ, we have been justified (Romans 5:1). The righteousness of Christ has been imputed to us. In sanctification, we must learn how to put on the Lord Jesus Christ moment by moment. We must be aware of His presence within us. We must yield to His will for our lives. We must have the mind of Christ (Philippians 2:5). We must constantly put Christ on. This means we must yield to His lordship over us. We must draw from His power to do so.

But we must also put off our old selves. We must crucify our sinful desires and make no provision for them. We must put no evil thing before our eyes. We must resist temptation — “In your struggle against sin you have not resisted to the point of shedding your blood” (Hebrews 12:4). We cannot do these things in our own power; but we can do them in the power of Christ. We must first put on Christ and then we will be able to fight against the sinful desires of our hearts.

Lord Jesus Christ, I desperately need You to enable me to resist the sinful desires that confront me. I admit that I cannot do this in my own strength. I must have You. Let me draw off Your power and enable me to make no provisions for my flesh today. Give me strength, wisdom and courage to stand against the temptations that I will face today.
