Scripture Reading: Romans 15:8-13
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” (Romans 15:13)
Paul is dealing with God’s blessings upon the Gentiles as they were engrafted into His covenant community and the Messiah would come to rule over them — “The root of Jesse will come, even He who arises to rule the Gentiles; in Him the Gentiles hope” (v. 12). The key word in the passage is “hope.” We Gentiles have hope because God brought us into His family and Jesus Christ rules over us.
God is the God of hope. We all need hope. Often we get discouraged and overwhelmed by life in this fallen world. But God is the God of hope! As we put our faith in Him we will be filled with “all joy and peace.” No matter what we are facing, we can experience God’s joy and peace.
The key to experiencing God’s joy and peace is found in Psalm 16:11 — “You make known to me the path of life; in Your presence there is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” In order for us to experience God’s joy and peace, we must come into His presence. When we do, we gain the right perspective again. We see Him as the sovereign Lord who loves us with an everlasting love. We realize that He is the God of hope!
Our focus should be on the beauty and glory of our Lord rather than on the difficult circumstances we may be facing. Yes, in His presence there is fullness of joy! Remember that He is the God of hope. When we keep our eyes on Him and as we believe in Him, we will find joy inexpressible and a peace that passes all comprehension.
God of Hope, thank You for Your presence in my life. Thank you for the joy and peace You bring to me regardless of the circumstances I am facing. Let me keep my eyes on You today. Let me come into Your presence where there is fullness of joy.
