Scripture Reading: Romans 15:30-33
“I appeal to you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God on my behalf, that I may be delivered from the unbelievers in Judea, and that my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints, so that by God’s will I may come to you with joy and be refreshed in your company.” (Romans 15:30-32)
Paul’s plan was first to go to Jerusalem to deliver the financial gifts from the Macedonians to the poor saints in Jerusalem. From there he planned to go to Spain by way of Rome. He wanted to visit the believers in Rome before he proceeded to Spain.
Paul knew that the trip to Jerusalem would be dangerous. So, he asked the believers in Rome to pray that he would be delivered from the unbelieving religious leaders there so that he could safely proceed with his plan to come to Rome and then on to Spain.
Proverbs 16:9 says — “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” This is the providence of God as work. Paul had a plan, but God directed Paul’s steps. When he went to Jerusalem, he was met with opposition. He was arrested and later sent to Rome as a prisoner. This was not exactly what Paul had in mind; but it was what God had in mind for Paul.
God is sovereign over all. He has His plans for us. He will direct our steps to accomplish His purposes through us. Don’t get thrown when YOUR plans don’t work out like you thought they would. God has other plans in mind for you!
Sovereign Lord, how comforting it is for me to know that You direct my steps. I come up with a lot of plans. Some turn out like I think they should; others don’t. I have to rest in Your providence. You are sovereign over all. What peace this gives to me.
