Scripture Reading: Romans 16:17-24
“For your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, but I want you to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil. The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.” (Romans 16:19,20)
Paul is giving encouragement to us. He says that we are to be wise as to what is good. Proverbs is a book of wisdom. It tells us how to be wise to what is good. Proverbs 1:7 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Read through Proverbs on a regular basis and you will discover God’s wisdom.
Paul also tells us to be innocent as to what is evil. We are to avoid evil at all cost. Remember these words from Paul’s epistle to the Ephesians — “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is” (Ephesians 5:15-17).
We must realize that we are in a battle, a spiritual battle. Satan is God’s great enemy and he is our’s also. We must be on guard at all times. But the good news is — “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.” God has already defeated Satan. Jesus’ death and resurrection put Satan to shame. His final defeat is yet to come. But his doom is sure!
Rest in the God of peace. Ultimate peace can only be found in Him. Jesus made peace with God possible for us (Romans 5:1). Now God’s peace is available to us — “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7).
God of peace, thank You that Jesus reconciled me to You. Thank you that through my justification I am at peace with You. But also I am so thankful for the inward peace that You give me, a peace which surpasses all understanding. During times of trouble and hardship, I can have Your peace because You are the God of peace.
