Scripture Reading: Jonah 1:17-2:10
“And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights.” (Jonah 1:17)
It is amazing to see how God uses certain instruments to bring us into His grace. He uses other people, and at other time, he may use circumstances that He brings into our lives. In Jonah’s case, God used a fish!
The most important words in our verse today are — “And the Lord APPOINTED a great fish.” The verb “appointed” is used several times in the book of Jonah. In each case, God sovereignly appointed a means to get Jonah’s attention. Later in the book the Lord appointed a plant, a worm, and a scorching wind (4:6,7,8) as a means to teach Jonah something he desperately needed to know.
While each of these circumstances was painful at the time, they later had a huge impact on Jonah’s life. The great fish is an example. The fish saved Jonah’s life by swallowing him. He was in the belly of the fish for three days. Here was God’s severe mercy at work. God used the fish to bring Jonah to his senses and as an instrument of His grace to save him.
God uses many different kinds of instruments in our lives to bring His grace upon us. In my case, God used an insurance salesman who took time to talk to a young man about a saving relationship with Jesus Christ. And He has used many other instruments to get my attention and to bring me to my senses. What instruments has God used to get your attention?
Sovereign and gracious God, I am so thankful that You will not let me remain in a state of rebellion against You. You will deal with me because You love me so much. Thank You for the various instruments You have used in my life to bring me into Your glorious grace.
