GOD’S DETERMINATION

Scripture Reading: Jonah 3:1-5

“Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, ‘Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message I tell you.’ So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord.” (Jonah 3:1-3a)

The purposes and plans of God cannot be undermined, thwarted, or undone. When God determines to do something, no one and nothing can prevent it from happening — “Also henceforth I am He; there is none who can deliver from My hand; I work, and who can turn it back?” (Isaiah 43:13)

God was determined to send Jonah to Nineveh. So, He called on Jonah the second time — “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message I tell you” (vs. 1,2). This time Jonah obeyed. Obviously, Jonah realized that he had no other choice. I don’t think his obedience was motivated by love.

God has an eternal purpose which will come to pass. He is the sovereign Lord who works all things according to the counsel of His will — “In Him we have been predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will” (Ephesians 1:11).

Knowing that God has an eternal plan that cannot be thwarted, gives me great peace. God has chosen me to be with Him throughout all eternity. Nothing can prevent His will from happening. Jesus said, “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand” (John 10:28,29).

Sovereign Lord, what comfort and peace it gives me to know that You have an eternal plan for my life. I know that You are determined to bring to pass the purposes and plans You have made for all of us. You are all powerful and all wise. Nothing and no one can interfere with Your perfect will. Today I ask that You direct my steps as I seek to follow Your will for my life.
