Scripture Reading: Philippians 3:7-11
“But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” (Philippians 3:7-8a)
When we grasp the gospel with our hearts, everything changes. We begin to see things in a different light. Things that once were so important to us become less important. Things we put our hope in change. We learn the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus as our Lord.
This was the case with the Apostle Paul. At one time he was taken with his religious heritage. He was proud of his morality and acts of religious zeal. But when he came to faith in Jesus Christ, his life changed radically. What he valued changed radically as well. Now only one thing mattered to him — “the surpassing worth of knowing Jesus Christ.”
Paul came to realize that all he needed was Jesus. Jesus was everything to him. All things he valued so much he counted as loss compared to his deep desire to know Christ better and better.
Paul knew what Jesus had done for him. He knew what a terrible sinner he was, and yet Jesus died for him and purchased him with His blood. He knew that Jesus lived in him and gave him power to live a godly life. To put it simply — Paul was absolutely taken with Jesus!
Lord Jesus, I confess that I still value other things too much. In fact, I put some of them before You. Let me see the surpassing worth of knowing You as my Lord. Let me put aside the things that I love more than I love You. I know that You are all I need. Enable me to live my life today with this in mind.
