Scripture Reading: Habakkuk 3:16-19

“I hear, and my body trembles; my lips quiver at the sound; rottenness enters into my bones; my legs tremble beneath me. Yet I will quietly wait for the day of trouble to come upon people who invade us.” (Habakkuk 3:16)

Habakkuk knew that a day of trouble was coming because God had told him so. The Babylonians were going to come upon the rebellious people of Israel as an instrument of God’s judgment. But God also promised to judge the Babylonians for their evil as well.

We must face the reality of the consequences of evil. We cannot escape it and we cannot avoid it. Living in this broken world is difficult. There will be times of trouble, suffering, disappointment and pain. No one is exempt from these things. We should not be surprised when they come upon us.

When we experience times of difficulty and pain, we still have hope. This hope gives us the ability to have the right attitude when we face troubling times. We know that God is for us and that He will take us through these times of pain and suffering. My grandmother often said when we faced difficulties, “This too will pass.” And it will.

We have to look at the bigger picture. We have to see things form God’s perspective. This is how Paul could write these words in Romans — “More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us” (Romans 3:3-5).

Habakkuk had the right attitude because he knew that God would do what is right. He waited on God to fulfill His word. “Yet I will quietly wait for the day of trouble to come upon people who invade us.” Habakkuk knew that ultimately God would judge the Babylonians also for their evil ways.

Lord God, give me the ability to wait patiently upon You. Enable me to keep my eyes on You no matter what I have to face on this earth. I know that You are God and that You are good. You always do what is best for Your people.
