SPIRITUAL WISDOM AND UNDERSTANDING

Scripture Reading: Colossians 1:9-14

“And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, pleasing Him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.” (Colossians 1:9,10)

Paul often began his epistles with a prayer for those who would read them. In this prayer, Paul prays that we may be filled with the knowledge of God’s will. He used a particular Greek word, “epignosis,” which means a real and deep knowledge. In this epistle, Paul deals with some deep truths about Jesus. So, he prays that we will be filled with this real and deep knowledge in all spiritual wisdom and understanding so that we can grasp these truths.

The truth is that we cannot understand the things of God without the illumination of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit opens our hearts and minds to receive God’s truth. He enables us to grasp the real and deep knowledge that God reveals in His Word. This is why we must pray for spiritual enlightenment before we read the Scriptures.

This real and deep knowledge of the will of God enables us to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, so that we can please Him in all respects. God wants us to act on the truths He has revealed to us. It is not enough to have a head knowledge about spiritual things. God wants His truth to transform us from the inside out. When this happens, we are able to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord. Again this is impossible without the presence and power of the Holy Spirit.

When we are filled with the knowledge of God’s will, we will also bear fruit. Certainly Paul is referring to the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22,23) and the fruit of godly character. As we increase in the knowledge of God’s will, we will see changes in our lives.

Lord, I pray that I may be filled with the knowledge of Your will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of You. I pray that I please You today and that I bear fruit in every good work.
